Banking services are provided by several commercial banks in Slovakia. Banks in Slovakia are usually open only on working days. Some branches located in big shopping centres offer their services also at weekend.
Slovak banks offer a wide range of cash and non-cash services. Cash services include for example: bank transfers, loans, mortgages, saving accounts or currency exchange. Non-cash services are customer account maintenance, credit and debit cards, insurance, financial consulting, etc.
All banks in Slovakia tend to adjust their services to individual personal needs of the customer. As different clients have different needs and requirements, they differentiate between client as an individual person, an entrepreneur and big or medium sized enterprises.
Different charge cards, credit cards and debit cards are available in Slovakia: MasterCard, Visa, Maestro, American Express and Diners Club International. According to the used technology, we distinguish electronic and embossed cards. Despite the comfortableness the credit card payment is not so common is Slovakia as in other countries. However, many Slovak people use their debit cards when paying in shops or restaurants. Usually, when paying with a debit card, you are required to supply your pin code or your signature. Order checks are not used in Slovakia.
Internet banking enables the bank clients to perform most of the bank services online. You can make transactions, standing orders or check the account balance online. Usually internet banking is available in every Slovak bank upon application. When opening an account is a Slovak bank, the staff will usually offer you this service.
National Bank of Slovakia is our central bank. Its main goal is to maintain price stability of the products and services. Biggest and oldest commercial banks in Slovakia are: Slovenská sporiteľňa - SLSP and Všeobecna úverová banka - VUB bank.
