The night sky, amazing astronomical phenomena, or planets – you can admire all this and much more through an astronomical telescope and binoculars in a planetarium and an observatory in Slovakia. There are five Slovak observatories with a planetarium: Hlohovec, Ziar nad Hronom, Hurbanovo, Kosice, and Presov. Those who enjoy learning about the space and its secrets should definitely pay the visit in Slovakia observatories. Student groups are frequent and eager visitors to observatories.
Slovak Central Observatory Hurbanovo carries out scientific research and organizes various astronomy-related events, competitions, and conferences. It also offers educational programs for students interested in learning about the Universe. The Observatory is open for group visits Monday to Friday and closed on weekend and holidays. Group visits must be booked in advance (Contact Number: 035/760 24 85). Individual visitors can visit the observatory on Friday at 5:30 p.m.(October- March) or at 7.30p.m (April-September). Admission fee is 50SKK (€1.65).
The observatory sits in the midst of the park with a statue of Copernicus and a sundial.
The observatory branch on Fatranska Street in Nitra is open to public on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Sobotište Observatory was founded in 1972 and is located in the local primary school about 250 m from the village center. It is an amateur observatory and all activities are done by members of local organization of Slovak Union of Astronomers Amateurs in Sobotište.
Sobotište observatory offers video projection of astronomical shots and animations, watching meteorological phenomena, and in good weather conditions watching planets and night sky objects.
